Below is a link to the article "A Robot in Every Home" by Bill Gates in the Jan 2007 issue of Scientific American. In addition to comparing the robotics industry to the computer industry 30ish years ago and speculating about the near-term future of the robotics industry, he raises an interesting point about what "robot" really means.
"In fact, as mobile peripheral devices become more and more common, it may be increasingly difficult to say exactly what a robot is. Because the new machines will be so specialized and ubiquitous--and look so little like the two-legged automatons of science fiction--we probably will not even call them robots."
How about we then call them "ARTs"? ...Anthropomorphized Robotic Thingy's!
